Plastic straw twine threatens stork chicks in Turkey
Bahattin Sürücü, President of the Ecosystem Protection and Nature Lovers Association (EKODOSD), has issued a warning regarding the dangers posed by black plastic straw twine used in livestock farming.
Storks frequently collect these discarded plastic strings from the environment to use in their nests. Once in the nest, the twine can wrap around the necks and legs of young storks, leading to severe injuries, permanent disability, or death. Sürücü noted that this issue affects many young birds every year.
In addition to the threat to bird populations, the plastic twine also poses a risk to both large and small livestock. Sürücü is calling on those in the livestock industry to collect used twine and dispose of it properly rather than leaving it in nature. He also encouraged the public to pick up any plastic twine found in the wild to help protect local wildlife.
