Plastic usage in agriculture and gardening

Plastic plays a dual role in agriculture and gardening, serving both as a source of environmental concern and a tool for food preservation. In gardening, the use of plastic containers and soil covers can lead to microplastic contamination in soil and water, affecting plant chemistry and microorganisms. Alternatives include using terracotta, ceramic, wood, or metal containers, and replacing plastic soil covers with reusable landscaping fabrics.

In large-scale agriculture, plasticulture is being utilized to reduce food waste. Technologies such as protective films for fruit, hail nets, flexible silos for grains, and specialized transport containers help protect crops from adverse weather, pests, and diseases. For instance, bagging banana bunches with plastic films can prevent insect damage and temperature-related skin changes, while hail nets protect apple orchards from physical damage. These applications aim to improve resource efficiency and maintain product quality throughout the supply chain.
