Plastic waste management advances through pyrolysis and compostable films

Developments in plastic waste management are focusing on both chemical recycling and the adoption of bio-based alternatives to reduce environmental impact.

Pyrolysis offers a thermal conversion pathway for plastics that are difficult to recycle through conventional mechanical processes. By heating polymers in an oxygen-deficient environment, long polymer chains break down into smaller hydrocarbon molecules. This process can transform waste plastic into useful secondary resources, such as pyrolysis oil, non-condensable gas, and solid residue. The efficiency of this method depends heavily on feedstock preparation and precise temperature control to manage different polymer types like polyethylene and polypropylene.

In the industrial supply chain, companies are moving toward compostable alternatives to replace single-use polyethylene films. EcoCortec, a subsidiary of Cortec Corporation, has developed certified compostable films, including EcoShrink and EcoWrap, designed for heavy-duty industrial use. These films are engineered to maintain pallet load stability and protect goods from dust and moisture while being compatible with existing packaging equipment. Unlike early bio-based versions, these newer materials are designed to maintain structural integrity during normal storage and only break down in industrial composting environments.
