Plastic‑Recycled Building Systems Enable Rapid, Low‑Cost Housing

Colombian entrepreneurs Oscar Andrés Méndez and Isabel Cristina Gámez have commercialized a construction system that converts up to 95% recycled plastic into interlocking bricks. The blocks, produced by their firm Conceptos Plásticos, can be assembled like Lego to erect a typical two‑room house in about five days at a cost of US$4,000‑$7,000. The finished structures are fire‑resistant, earthquake‑proof, insulated and are projected to last more than two centuries; the company has already built more than 50 homes and schools in Colombia.

Separately, engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have 3D‑printed structural trusses from recycled PET plastic reinforced with glass fiber. Each 2.4 m‑long truss, weighing 5.9 kg, is produced in roughly 13 minutes and can sustain loads exceeding 1,800 kg. The MIT team plans to expand the process to fabricate other building components, aiming to turn plastic waste into complete, load‑bearing house frames.

Both initiatives illustrate a growing effort to address the global housing shortage and plastic‑waste crisis by using fast, affordable, and environmentally friendly construction methods.
