Mexican citizens demand removal of Senator Enrique Inzunza’s immunity

A group of citizens, activists, and lawyers delivered more than 23,000 signatures to the Mexican Senate demanding the removal of parliamentary immunity for Senator Enrique Inzunza Cázarez. The initiative, led by former National Anticorruption System president Vania Pérez Morales, seeks to trigger a formal declaration of procedence to allow Inzunza to face legal investigations without his current protections.

The demand follows formal accusations from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, which alleges that Inzunza and other officials conspired with the Sinaloa Cartel to smuggle narcotics and weapons into the United States. While the signatures were intended for the Senate, reports indicate some participants faced difficulties accessing the building.

Inzunza, who recently left the Morena party to serve as an independent senator, has publicly denied all allegations of links to organized crime. The legal petition has also been submitted to the Chamber of Deputies to expedite the process.
