Plataforma Unitaria Democrática reports 105 political prisoner releases

The opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD) reported that it has verified 105 political prisoner releases as of August 21, one week after the interim government announced a new release process.

Despite these releases, the PUD maintains that more than 460 individuals remain detained for political reasons. The coalition has called for release processes that are ‘massive, permanent, expeditious, public, and transparent’ to ensure the freedom of all political prisoners. The group noted that they have adjusted their records after receiving information regarding new cases of political detainees that had not been previously reported.

Previously, the government announced that 131 releases had been agreed upon by courts following a request from the Public Ministry. The NGO Foro Penal had also confirmed 81 releases in a separate count during the same period.
