Platania Municipality seeks measures to support olive oil production
Independent Municipal Councilor Stefanos Kokolakis has submitted a formal memorandum to the Mayor and Municipal Council of Platania, calling for institutional intervention to ensure the sustainability of olive cultivation.
The proposal highlights severe economic pressure on the primary sector, noting that producer prices currently fail to cover the high operational costs of cultivation, harvesting, energy, and raw materials. Kokolakis identifies the accumulation of large unsold stocks across Europe—specifically in Greece, Spain, Italy, and Portugal—as a fundamental cause of the current crisis.
The requested measures include suspending imports from third countries, implementing pan-European stock management, rationalizing production costs, coordinating marketing networks, and promoting the unique identity of Cretan olive oil.
