Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang Apologizes to Igbo for Civil War Role

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang publicly apologized to Igbo leaders for the state's involvement in the 1967‑1970 Nigerian Civil War, saying Plateau people were “deceived” into fighting and urging the community to move forward together. The apology was delivered during a meeting with Igbo representatives from the state’s 17 local government areas and was praised by the Izu Umunna Cultural Association and political commentator Josef Onoh as a courageous step toward national reconciliation.

Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development Solomon Dalung criticised the governor, arguing he lacked constitutional authority to speak for the Plateau populace and that the statement did not reflect the views of all residents. The controversy has sparked broader calls for similar gestures from other ethnic groups, including the Hausa community.
