Plateau State, Nigeria reports 14 cholera deaths among 441 suspected cases

The Plateau State Government announced that 441 suspected cholera cases and 14 deaths have been recorded across four local government areas since the outbreak began in June 2026. Health Commissioner Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong reported 20 positive Rapid Diagnostic Test results and six laboratory‑confirmed cases, affecting 25 wards and 107 settlements.

Mangu LGA, identified as the epicentre, recorded 53 suspected cases and 10 deaths but has had no active cases since July 22. Jos North LGA accounts for the majority of ongoing cases with 277 suspected infections and four deaths; only three patients remain admitted there. Jos South reported a single confirmed case that has recovered, while Barkin Ladi recorded 23 suspected cases with no fatalities.

The state activated a coordinated multi‑sectoral emergency response involving local councils, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and development partners. Authorities say the decline in admissions indicates that interventions are taking effect, though they warn that late presentation to health facilities contributed to many of the deaths.
