Plateau United and Mighty Jets win NPFL preseason openers

Plateau United and Mighty Jets secured victories on the opening day of the 2026 NPFL Super 6 invitational preseason tournament in Jos, Nigeria. Plateau United defeated Rivers United 1–0 with a goal from Jibril Ibrahim, while Mighty Jets beat El-Kanemi Warriors 1–0 following a 56th-minute strike by Usman Meyanga.

The tournament, organized by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is designed to enhance the fitness and match readiness of Nigerian clubs ahead of their CAF continental competitions. NPFL Chief Operating Officer Prince Davidson Owumi noted that the timing is intended to provide competitive match experience just days before the start of CAF club matches.

Participating teams include champions Rangers International, runners-up Rivers United, and Federation Cup winners El-Kanemi Warriors. The tournament features a format ensuring clubs in CAF competitions play at least four competitive matches. The final is scheduled for Sunday, August 23, at the New Jos Township Stadium.
