PlatinumGames details 120 FPS optimization for NINJA GAIDEN 4

Developers at PlatinumGames and I. Meisters shared technical insights at CEDEC 2026 regarding the achievement of a 120 FPS mode for 'NINJA GAIDEN 4'. To meet the demanding 8.33 millisecond frame time requirement, the team implemented a strategy of prioritizing performance in critical areas, such as boss battles, while allowing higher visual fidelity in non-combat sections.

The optimization process involved several phases, including deciding which dynamic features to forgo—such as dynamic terrain updates and certain global illumination methods—to ensure stability. The team established specific performance targets for different scene types and utilized a multi-tiered evaluation system to detect frame-time spikes and ensure a smooth experience.

Technically, the jump from 60 FPS to 120 FPS halves the interval between rendered updates from 16.67 milliseconds to 8.33 milliseconds. This reduction improves motion clarity and input responsiveness, particularly in fast-paced genres like action and competitive shooters, provided the hardware and software can sustain the target rate.
