Playa del Carmen approves elderly care unit and sargassum sand restoration
The Playa del Carmen City Council has approved the creation of a specialized Unit for the Attention of Older Adults. Led by Municipal President Estefanía Mercado, the council unanimously passed reforms to the Organic Regulation of the Municipal Public Administration to formalize this new administrative area.
Separately, local authorities are preparing to return sand recovered from sargassum collection to the coastline. Irving Lili Madrigal, director of the Maritime Terrestrial Federal Zone (Zofemat), stated that the project has been submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) for approval. The initiative aims to restore coastal dunes in areas such as El Recodo, Calle 10, and Playacar. The recovered sand was separated from approximately 30,000 tons of sargassum collected in 2025 and over 30,000 tons collected so far in 2026.
