Playa del Carmen bridge deterioration poses safety risks

Residents in Playa del Carmen are raising alarms regarding the deteriorating condition of a major vehicular bridge that connects the city to Cancún and the rest of the Riviera Maya. Local citizens report that pieces of concrete frequently detach from the structure, posing a direct threat to the hundreds of people who pass beneath it daily.

Of particular concern is a basketball court located near Avenida Juárez, which is used daily by families and youth. Witnesses have shared images of fallen debris, including a large rock that recently detached near the municipal cemetery. The bridge, which spans approximately 4 kilometers and carries over 20,000 vehicles daily, was inaugurated in 2011.

Community members are calling on federal authorities to invest in necessary maintenance and are urging Protección Civil to conduct an immediate safety inspection to determine if pedestrian access beneath the bridge should be restricted.
