Playa del Carmen councilors receive death threats allegedly from cartel

Councilors in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, including the municipal syndic, were threatened with death by phone calls that appeared to come from a drug cartel, according to councilor José Luis Toledo Medina. Toledo said the calls contained precise personal details about officials and their families, and he warned that both PRI opposition members and Morena officials, the party that runs the municipality under mayor Estefanía Mercado Asencio, were targeted.

He criticized the municipal government's lack of response, noting no security reinforcements or protective measures have been provided. Toledo appealed to federal security secretary Omar García Harfuch and Quintana Roo governor Mara Lezama, emphasizing that the threats came just days after the killing of a mayor in Temoac, Morelos. No police action has been reported as of the interview.
