Playa del Carmen designates Punta Esmeralda as municipal heritage, securing public beach access

The municipal council of Playa del Carmen approved the incorporation of the Punta Esmeralda beach access area into the city's municipal heritage. The legal process is nearly complete, pending only the notarized protocol to formalize the integration. Once finalized, the beach will remain open to all residents and tourists, and the municipality plans improvement works to enhance visitor conditions.

Municipal syndic José Agustín Aguilar Méndez highlighted that the move provides legal certainty for the site and prevents private interests from restricting access. The decision is part of a broader municipal strategy reviewing around 200 properties that are currently used by private parties but are considered of public interest, with potential further actions to regularize such spaces.
