Playa del Carmen experiences flooding and hotel roof collapse

Heavy rainfall in Playa del Carmen has caused significant infrastructure issues and structural damage. On Wednesday, localized rain showers led to flooding in several neighborhoods, including 28 de Julio, Villamar 1, and Ejido. Residents attributed the flooding to inadequate drainage maintenance, clogged storm drains caused by trash accumulation, and a lack of sufficient absorption wells.

Following the rains, the abandoned Agua Azul hotel in the tourist zone experienced a partial collapse during the early hours of Thursday. Two roof sections fell onto the sidewalk near Quinta Avenida, damaging two ground-floor commercial businesses, including a pizzeria. No injuries were reported. Local residents expressed concern over the building's long-term deterioration and have called for Civil Protection to conduct structural assessments to prevent further collapses.
