Paraíso interim mayor's home targeted in shooting
The residence of María Elisa Hernández Flores, the interim mayor of Paraíso, Tabasco, was targeted in a shooting early Tuesday morning. Two men on a motorcycle reportedly fired shots at the home, leaving at least three spent shell casings at the scene. No injuries were reported in the attack.
Hernández Flores, a former councilwoman who recently assumed the interim presidency, confirmed the incident and stated she had been receiving threats. Her appointment follows the departure of former mayor Alfonso Baca Sevilla, who is currently a fugitive and under investigation by the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) for several high-impact crimes, including torture and illegal possession of firearms.
An FGR operation on August 19 led to the detention of at least six municipal officials, including the directors of Public Works and Administration. The Paraíso City Council formally approved the substitution mechanism to ensure administrative continuity during this period of investigation.
