Quintana Roo municipalities implement security and social programs
Municipal governments in Quintana Roo, Mexico, are implementing various social and security initiatives. In Playa del Carmen, Mayor Estefanía Mercado reported a 51.6% reduction in intentional homicide between January and August 2026 compared to the previous year. Other reported decreases include firearm injuries (50%), vehicle theft (45.5%), and motorcycle theft (45.6%). The local government has also assumed operational command of the 'Blindaje Quinta Avenida' security operation in the main tourist corridor, coordinating with the National Guard, Navy, and Army.
To address gender-based violence, the Institute of Women in Playa del Carmen launched the ‘Entre Mujeres’ brigade, providing psychological and legal services directly to communities. Additionally, the organization Mujeres en Movimiento has called for increased budgets to support victims of violence.
Other regional activities include municipal maintenance programs in Puerto Morelos, free pet sterilization campaigns in Cancún, and youth rights awareness rallies in Playa del Carmen. Business leaders in Coparmex Quintana Roo also reported stable finances and ongoing collaboration with local authorities.
