Playa del Carmen man sentenced to prison for property theft

A judge has sentenced Isidro Gómez Gómez to three years, 11 months, and seven days in prison for the crime of property theft (despojo) in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.

Investigations revealed that in November 2016, Gómez Gómez entered into a transaction agreement and a private purchase-sale contract with a female victim regarding a property in the Ejidal neighborhood. Between November 2016 and November 2017, the victim made 16 cash payments totaling 610,000 pesos.

Although the victim had taken physical possession of the property, Gómez Gómez returned to the site on August 19, 2019, accompanied by four individuals. He changed the locks, claiming ownership of the premises. The incident involved an attempt to enter the home with a knife, leading to police intervention. In addition to the prison sentence, the defendant must pay 610,000 pesos in reparations for material damages and a fine.
