Playa del Carmen marks 33 years as a municipality

Mayor Estefanía Mercado presided over a ceremony honoring the founders, former mayors and pioneering families of Playa del Carmen as the town celebrated its 33rd anniversary. The event gathered municipal authorities, local business leaders and community representatives, who highlighted the city's growth into a major tourist, economic and cultural destination.

The municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts (IMCAP) also staged a gala for the 31 graduates of the Escuela de Iniciación Artística, showcasing music, dance, theatre and visual arts performances. Director Ernesto Santiago Martínez Cuéllar emphasized the contribution of these young creators to local and national culture.

Quintana Roo deputy Tepy Gutiérrez used the anniversary to stress the city’s expanding tourism sector and announced coordinated plans with federal and state agencies to address the recurring sargassum problem along the Caribbean coast.
