Playa Delfines environmental concerns spark debate over machinery use

Heavy machinery and excavation work at Playa Delfines in Cancun’s Hotel Zone have sparked environmental concerns regarding the protection of sea turtle nesting sites. Local activists and citizens raised alarms after observing excavators operating on the sand, which is part of a protected Natural Protected Area (ANP) designated in 2023. There are fears that soil compaction and vibrations could destroy the habitat of species such as the white and hawksbill turtles, as well as the dune vegetation that prevents coastal erosion.

Local authorities, including the Director of Municipal Ecology, Fernando Haro Salinas, clarified that the work was part of a five-day maintenance project for Telmex submarine fiber optic cables. Officials stated the project had permits from the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and denied that the excavations were intended for new real estate or hotel developments.

While municipal officials claim that environmental monitors were present 24 hours a day to protect nests and that no incidents were recorded, critics continue to demand full transparency regarding the official authorizations and environmental supervision logs used during the operation.
