Tijuana and Tecate record 24 rickettsiosis cases, 12 deaths
The health jurisdiction covering Tijuana, Tecate and Playas de Rosarito confirmed 24 laboratory‑confirmed cases of rickettsiosis from January to date, with 18 cases in Tijuana and six in Tecate. Twelve fatalities have been linked to the disease – eight in Tijuana and four in Tecate – after testing 105 suspected patients.
The cases are concentrated in neighborhoods such as Villa del Campo, Granjas Familiares, Ojo de Agua, El Niño, Mariano Matamoros, Villa del Prado, 3 de Octubre and Cañadas del Florido, where high temperatures and stray dogs promote tick proliferation. Health officials urged residents to keep yards clean, regularly treat pets for fleas and ticks, and seek immediate medical care for fever, severe headache, general malaise or skin rashes, noting that prompt diagnosis reduces complications.
