PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling console of all time

The PlayStation 2 holds the record as the best-selling video game console globally, with 160.01 million units sold. It maintains its lead over the Nintendo Switch, which has reached 156.59 million units, and the Nintendo DS, which stands at 154.02 million.

Sony’s success with the PlayStation 2 is attributed to its multi-functional nature during the early 2000s. By integrating a DVD player at a competitive price, the console served as both a gaming system and a home cinema device at a time when DVD players were becoming household staples.

While the console is over two decades old, it remains functional for media playback. Users can still use PlayStation 2 Fat and Slim models to watch commercial DVDs, though output is limited to standard definition (480i or 480p). Modern users may require high-quality AV cables or HDMI adapters to improve image quality on high-resolution screens. Users should also note that the console is not universal and is subject to regional DVD coding.
