PlayStation 5 jailbroken to run local AI models

Developers have successfully demonstrated that a jailbroken Sony PlayStation 5 can function as a local AI server capable of running large language models (LLMs). While an initial project named “PS5LM” relied on the console's CPU and was limited to approximately 6GB of available memory, a new iteration called “PS5LM Plus” utilizes the GPU via the Vulkan API and RADV drivers.

By leveraging the console's unified 16GB GDDR6 memory architecture, the updated software increases available memory to roughly 11.4GB. This allows the device to run the Qwen3.8-27B model using heavy 2-bit quantization, which compresses the model to 6.8GB. Performance tests show the 27B model generating approximately 20.7 to 20.9 tokens per second. Smaller models, such as Llama 3.2 3B, have achieved speeds as high as 124 tokens per second.

Despite the technical achievement, the method requires a console jailbreak, which voids warranties and carries the risk of being banned from online services. The system also supports remote access, allowing users to interact with the AI via computers or smartphones on the same local network.
