PlayStation boycott fails to impact user engagement
A recent consumer boycott of PlayStation services has failed to produce significant changes in player engagement or user numbers, according to industry analysis. The protest, organized by fans in late August, was a reaction to Sony’s decision to phase out physical media support.
Participants of the boycott intended to stop launching consoles, making purchases, and renewing subscriptions such as PlayStation Plus. However, Matt Piscatella, an analyst at Circana, noted that the corporation did not record any meaningful shifts in player activity or engagement during this period.
Industry observers suggest the boycott's impact may have been mitigated by other major gaming events occurring simultaneously, including gameplay reveals for Grand Theft Auto VI and the beta for Modern Warfare 4. Sony is expected to continue its transition toward digital-only models, with next year potentially being the final year the platform supports physical media.
