PlayStation digital revenue surges 360% as physical media declines

The video game industry is seeing a massive shift toward digital consumption, even as a niche market for physical collector's editions persists. Analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners reports that over the last decade, PlayStation digital sales and DLC revenue have surged by 360%, while PlayStation Plus revenue grew by 303%. In contrast, revenue from physical formats has declined by 33%.

Despite this digital dominance and Sony's decision to end disc production by 2028, physical media remains relevant, with 70 million physical copies sold in FY25. Some analysts suggest Sony's pivot aims to reduce costs and prepare for future hardware, such as a potential high-end PS6, by focusing on users integrated into the digital ecosystem.

Simultaneously, the demand for high-end physical collectibles remains steady. Specialty items such as the DOOM Anthology (featuring a BFG replica), the Gobliiins Collection (including a floppy disk), and the DREDGE Collector's Edition continue to be available through retailers like Amazon, catering to enthusiasts of physical media and nostalgia.
