Sony clarifies digital game purchases are licenses, not ownership
Sony has sparked significant controversy among PlayStation users by sending communications clarifying that digital game purchases do not constitute ownership. The company’s updated terms emphasize that users are granted a “limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and personal license” to use software, rather than owning the product itself.
This clarification comes at a sensitive time for the platform. Sony previously announced plans to cease the production of physical game discs by January 2028, signaling a shift toward a digital-only ecosystem. The move toward digital-only access has raised concerns regarding long-term access to libraries, as digital content remains dependent on server availability and account status.
In response to these shifts, some gaming groups have organized protests, including a “blackout” campaign where participants are encouraged to stop using their consoles to impact active player metrics. The debate highlights a growing tension between digital distribution models and consumer expectations of permanent ownership.
