PlayStation to end new physical game production by 2028

The gaming industry is undergoing a significant shift as physical media faces a decline in favor of digital distribution. PlayStation has announced that it will cease the production of new physical games starting in January 2028, a move that has sparked protests within the gaming community. Critics argue that the transition to a purely digital ecosystem threatens the preservation of video game history and limits consumer choice.

In addition to the phase-out of physical discs, the company has also announced the gradual closure of the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. Despite community backlash, PlayStation's CFO, Lin Tao, stated during an investor call that the company is moving “with caution” toward a 100% digital ecosystem. Tao noted that the company does not expect the discontinuation of disc production to have a negative financial impact, though she acknowledged the emotional attachment players have to the physical format.
