Sony to End PlayStation Physical Discs by 2028 Amid EU Inaction

Sony announced on 1 July 2026 that it will cease production of physical game discs for new PlayStation 5 titles starting in January 2028, moving its flagship franchise to a fully digital distribution model. The decision sparked widespread consumer backlash, with petitions gathering over 300 000 signatures across Europe and calls for legal action to preserve ownership rights. In response, European Commission commissioner Michael McGrath stated that the EU cannot compel Sony to continue offering physical media, citing commercial and contractual freedom under EU law.

The announcement also triggered a wave of criticism from gamers, industry analysts and former PlayStation executives. Ex‑PlayStation Studios head Shawn Layden expressed personal disappointment, while analysts highlighted the higher profit margins of digital sales—approximately $70 USD per copy versus $45 USD for physical editions. Shortly after the news, several Sony executives sold shares worth millions of dollars, adding to market speculation.

Despite the controversy, Sony maintains that the shift is driven by changing consumer habits and the growing share of digital sales, which now account for about 80 % of game purchases. The company reassured that existing physical titles will remain available and that re‑pressings of pre‑2027 games can still be produced.

The story reflects a broader industry trend toward digital‑only distribution, raising questions about consumer ownership, second‑hand markets and the long‑term role of physical media in gaming.
