PlayStation users launch global #PSBlackout protest against Sony

PlayStation users have launched a global protest movement known as #PSBlackout in response to Sony’s decision to phase out physical game discs by 2028. The movement initially called for a seven-day boycott, from August 23 to August 30, aimed at reducing active user metrics and impacting revenue associated with the ecosystem.

Following the initial announcement, organizers expanded the scope of the protest, calling for an indefinite blackout to ensure a more significant impact on the corporation. Protesters are expressing concerns regarding the loss of physical media, the disappearance of the used games market, and the limitations of digital ownership. Critics argue that digital licenses do not grant true ownership, as access remains subject to Sony’s terms of service, server availability, and account status.

Beyond the transition to digital-only models, the movement also targets Sony’s recent business strategies, including the closure of various development studios.
