Plaza de España in Seville faces new event regulations
A new ordinance has been introduced to regulate temporary events and activities at the Plaza de España in Seville. The regulation aims to manage the use of this historic monument, designed by Aníbal González, amid ongoing political and social debate regarding the privatization of public spaces.
Under the new rules, a single event may occupy the space for up to 45 calendar days, including setup and dismantling. In certain circumstances, this period can extend to 60 days. To prevent permanent occupation, the ordinance requires a minimum rest period of at least one month between events. Critics note that with multiple events, the plaza could be occupied by large-scale structures for approximately eight months of the year.
Spatial restrictions are also included, stating that event installations and furniture cannot occupy more than 50% of the available free space in the authorized area. The ordinance lacks specific dedicated tariffs for the Plaza de España, instead applying general regulations used for kiosks, advertising, and street commerce. Currently, business events and similar activities are taxed at 250 euros per 100 square meters, with a minimum fee of 1,500 euros.
