Plaza Tower: Teen dies after fall in abandoned New Orleans high-rise

A 17-year-old from Belle Chasse died early Saturday morning after falling inside the abandoned Plaza Tower in downtown New Orleans. According to the New Orleans Police Department, the teenager was part of a group from Plaquemines Parish engaged in “urban exploring” when the incident occurred near midnight.

Police report that the group ascended to a higher floor of the 45-story skyscraper using an interior staircase that lacked safety railings. While attempting to descend, the victim fell and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another teenager in the group was hospitalized with deep lacerations to an arm and wrist. Authorities believe the underage group may have been consuming alcohol.

The Plaza Tower is a privately owned building that had been fenced off from the public. While police noted that trespassing charges could be considered, NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the immediate priority is addressing the trauma experienced by the involved youths and their families. The Plaquemines Parish School District has announced that counselors will be made available to support students and staff following the loss of the student.
