Leonel Fernández criticizes PRM government over security and cost of living

Leonel Fernández, president of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), has criticized the governing Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) for what he termed “ineptitude” and “inefficiency.” During a political event in San Cristóbal, Fernández highlighted several domestic issues, including rising public insecurity and the high cost of living. He specifically pointed to the high prices of basic food items like plantains and chicken, noting that despite local production, prices in the Dominican Republic remain higher than in parts of the United States.

Fernández also addressed concerns regarding public safety, labeling the government's security policies a “failure” and questioning the effectiveness of the National Police reform. He noted frequent changes in police leadership as a sign of instability. Additionally, he criticized the management of essential services, citing electricity blackouts, rising utility rates, and difficulties in the water supply.

In terms of political organization, Fernández announced that the FP is working toward reaching 2.5 million members by December and is strengthening its territorial presence across various provinces. He also discussed the importance of the Dominican diaspora, emphasizing the need to move beyond remittances to leverage the professional and entrepreneurial expertise of citizens living abroad.
