PLDT and Globe block websites hosting extreme violence

Philippine telecommunications companies PLDT, Smart Communications, and Globe Telecom are implementing network-level blocks on hundreds of websites that host or stream extreme violence, including footage of school shootings.

PLDT and Smart Communications stated they will preemptively ban more than 100 identified sites to prevent their networks from being used to glorify violence. The companies are coordinating with government agencies, child protection groups, and parenting communities to identify further platforms. PLDT Chief Operating Officer Butch Jimenez emphasized that content turning real-world violence into entertainment has no place on their networks.

Globe Telecom is also blocking hundreds of sites containing gore-related material and extreme violence, including those subject to government orders. Globe General Counsel Froilan Castelo noted the industry's responsibility to protect children and young people from emerging online risks. The company reported having previously blocked over 438,000 domains containing child sexual abuse material.
