PLDT and Smart test satellite-to-device emergency services in Batangas

PLDT Inc. and its wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications, Inc., have successfully conducted trials of direct-to-device satellite services in Batangas, Philippines. Conducted in partnership with Lynk Global Inc., the tests demonstrated the ability to deliver emergency alerts and text messages directly to standard mobile phones in remote areas where terrestrial cell towers are non-functional.

The initiative aims to bolster national disaster resilience and supports government directives to improve emergency communications. Following these successful trials, the companies are targeting a commercial launch of the service in the Philippines next year. Future development phases intend to expand satellite connectivity to include voice calls and data services.
