Pljevlja beekeepers face unpredictable yields due to climate change

Beekeepers in Pljevlja have concluded a season marked by significant regional disparities in honey yields. While the municipality saw an average of approximately 20 kilograms of honey per hive, with some colonies producing up to 50 kilograms, results varied drastically depending on the specific area.

High yields were reported in Maoča, Vrulje, Ljubišnja, and Meljak. Conversely, areas such as Potkovac, Kovač, and Boljanići experienced catastrophic seasons. Žarko Dragašević, president of the Matica Beekeeping Association, attributed these inconsistencies to unpredictable weather patterns. He noted that climate change has shifted the end of the honey season earlier by 15 to 20 days.

Despite the volatility, some producers continue to find success in the organic market. Dragašević reported that his organic apiary in Dragaši produced over 20 kilograms per hive from approximately 70 colonies, with certified organic honey selling for 20 euros per kilogram.
