Plovdiv Blood Centre faces summer shortfall as donors drop
During the summer months Bulgaria’s demand for blood rises by 20‑25 % because more traffic accidents occur and scheduled surgeries require stable supplies. At the same time, the number of donors declines due to holidays, travel and high temperatures. Dr. Yanko Yankov, director of the Transfusion Haematology Centre in Plovdiv, warned that “July and August are traditionally the most critical months, as donors are fewer while the need for blood does not decrease.” The Ministry of Health advises prospective donors to stay well‑hydrated, eat beforehand and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight before and after giving blood. Eligible donors must be 18‑65 years old, weigh at least 50 kg, be in good health and not be taking medication. One donation can save up to three lives, and medical staff urge eligible citizens to give blood now rather than waiting for the heat to pass.
