Plovdiv central station tunnel construction shows major defects

A newly constructed transport tunnel under the Central Station in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, has developed significant structural defects, posing a risk to motorists. A metal segment of a linear drainage shaft has completely collapsed, creating a dangerous trap directly in an active traffic lane. This failure occurred despite the recent application of fresh road markings.

In addition to the collapsed shaft, a section of the road connecting the Hristo Botev Boulevard traffic light to the roundabout in front of the station remains unfinished, lacking the final layer of asphalt. Residents have raised concerns regarding the oversight of construction materials and the responsibility of the National Company Railway Infrastructure, the Plovdiv Municipality, and the construction firm.

Trace Group Holding, the contractor for the project, has responded by committing to an immediate on-site inspection and the urgent repair of the compromised shaft.
