Plovdiv court denies release of minor accused in Georgi Kuzev murder

The Plovdiv District Court has denied a request to release a minor from custody accused of the brutal murder of 37-year-old Georgi Kuzev. The incident occurred on August 4, 2026, at Mladezhki Hill in Plovdiv.

Prosecutors allege the crime was committed with extreme cruelty and motivated by hooliganism related to the victim's sexual orientation. The defendant is accused of participating alongside seven other minors. While the defendant is under 18, magistrates ruled she understood the nature and significance of her actions and was capable of directing her conduct.

The court determined that while there is no immediate risk of the defendant fleeing, there remains a real risk of her committing further crimes if released. The court has ordered a judicial psychological and psychiatric evaluation for the minor and the other juvenile defendants. Additionally, provisions must be made to allow the minor to continue her education while in detention. The decision is subject to appeal.
