Plovdiv mayor faces council inquiries over youth centre audit and waste depot management

Councilors from the local political group “Independent for Plovdiv” have submitted formal questions to the mayor of Plovdiv on two separate issues. The first request concerns ongoing inspections of the municipal Youth Centre by the Ministry of Education and Science, the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism operator and the Council of Europe. The councilors ask for the findings, any recommendations, the risk to the Council‑of‑Europe quality label, possible loss of EU funding, and clarification on the centre director’s employment contract.

The second request focuses on the regional waste depot in the village of Călăpitsa. Councilors highlight the depot’s growing overload, delays in the waste‑separating installation, infrastructure problems, and warnings from the Ministry of Environment that Bulgaria could face EU sanctions under the “polluter‑pays” principle. They demand information on measures to reduce landfill use, plans for reclamation and expansion, financing under the 2021‑2027 Environment Programme, and access to expert group protocols. The councilors stress the need for transparency and accountability to protect the city’s reputation and European funding.
