Plovdiv murder sparks debate over social services and radicalization

The murder of Georgi Kusev at Youth Hill in Plovdiv has sparked intense debate regarding systemic failures in social services and the influence of radical subcultures on Bulgarian youth.

Minister of Labor and Social Policy Natalia Efremova stated that some of the youths involved or present during the killing had previously exhibited anti-social behavior. She noted that while some had been directed toward social services, the system failed to prevent the tragedy. Efremova highlighted a lack of cooperation from some families as a systemic issue and called for a complete rewrite of the law to better address modern societal needs. Currently, children in custody are under police protection, and social measures will proceed once psychologists are permitted to intervene.

Former Prime Minister Kiril Petkov commented on the incident, suggesting it should not be viewed merely as an act of youth aggression. He raised concerns regarding the origin of the violence, pointing to potential influences from Russian far-right propaganda and neo-Nazi subcultures. Petkov noted that symbols and gestures used by the youths appeared linked to movements popularized by Russian neo-Nazi figures, suggesting that violent models from these environments can find followers in Bulgaria.
