Doctors warn that untreated infections can progress to the kidneys, causing acute pyelonephritis and permanent kidney damage. Key symptoms requiring medical attention include pain or burning during urination, frequent urges, lower abdominal or flank pain, and cloudy or bloody urine. Fever and chills are critical indicators that an infection may have already reached the kidneys.

Medical professionals advise against self-medication with antibiotics or herbal remedies without a diagnosis, as incorrect treatment can allow the infection to advance. Prevention strategies include maintaining adequate fluid intake, regular urination, changing out of wet swimwear immediately, and practicing good hygiene.
