Plovdiv Old Municipality building faces restoration project

Architectural plans have been unveiled for the restoration of the historic Old Municipality building located at 41 Hristo G. Danov Street in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The project, designed by an architectural studio led by Tsvetelin Tsonevski, aims to return the 1907 neoclassical structure to its original appearance while transforming it into a modern hub for cultural and social activities.

The restoration plan includes repairing the compromised facades, restoring decorative ornaments, and repairing the roof. A key feature involves reinstating roof lunettes to increase natural light in the attic space, which is slated to become a 300-square-meter high-tech lecture hall for meetings and events. The ground floor is intended to house a cafe featuring restored historical storefronts.

Despite unanimous approval from the Plovdiv Municipal Council, the project's realization depends on securing funding. An application for financial support was submitted to the National Trust Ecofund in January, but a decision regarding the allocation of funds is still pending. Currently, the building is in a state of disrepair, housing a regional branch of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions (KNSB).
