Plovdiv Province sees sharp birth surge, outpacing other Bulgarian regions

Plovdiv Province recorded a notable increase in births in the first half of 2024, becoming the only region outside Sofia with a clear rise.

Data from the National Center for Public Health and Analyses show 1,645 babies were born in the second quarter, up 95 from the first quarter (about 6%). The total for January‑June reached 3,195, surpassing Varna (1,849), Burgas (1,322), Stara Zagora (1,214) and Pleven (1,198). Nationally, births rose by only 148 (1.3%) to 11,816.

Experts link the growth to the reputation of obstetric‑gynecologists and the popularity of the “Selena” hospital, which also celebrated the birth of its 1,000th baby of 2026, a girl named Simona, delivered by a team led by Dr. Topalova.

Similar but smaller increases were observed in Blagoevgrad, Pazardzhik, Ruse, Silistra and Yambol, while several regions recorded declines.
