Plovdiv submits bid to become European Capital of Sport 2028

The Bulgarian city of Plovdiv officially filed its application to the ACES Europe program to host the European Capital of Sport for 2028. The bid, branded “Active Plovdiv”, outlines plans to meet twelve criteria covering sports infrastructure, a dense competition calendar, access to education and employment, partnership networks, sport tourism, and inclusivity for youth, women, people with disabilities and older adults.

The municipal plan includes the development of 16 micro‑sport bases in neighbourhoods, upgrades to the rowing base, the main stadium and existing halls, and the integration of school sports clubs. An international commission will inspect the city in October, with a decision expected in November. The initiative aims to boost health, participation and the city’s profile ahead of other European contenders.

Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov and partner organisations highlighted the project’s focus on active lifestyles, professional and mass sport, and the creation of qualified coaches for all age groups.
