PLRA delays convention to 2027 amid 2028 election debates

The Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) of Paraguay has announced that it will not hold its convention this year, delaying the event until 2027. PLRA President Alcides Riveros stated that the upcoming convention will be the venue where the party establishes its official stance on alliances and candidacies for the 2028 elections.

Internal debate has emerged regarding the party's role in a potential opposition coalition. Miguel Prieto, former mayor of Ciudad del Este, suggested that the PLRA should seek at least the vice presidency in a 2028 formula, arguing that a liberal presidential candidate might struggle to attract Colorado Party voters. Riveros responded by asserting that the party intends to maintain its ability to lead a formula rather than merely acting as a supporting partner, while calling for unity to avoid benefiting the ruling party.

Separately, the PLRA has declared the prevention and eradication of violence against women as a priority. The party plans to implement training programs across its national committees in response to rising cases of femicide and attempted violence, citing its commitment to human rights and Law 5777/2016.
