Plug-in solar panels to launch for UK and German consumers

Plug-in solar panels are set to become available to consumers in the United Kingdom and Germany, targeting households without roof access, such as those in rented apartments.

In the UK, legal changes pushed through by Labour ministers will allow households to use plug-in devices for balconies and gardens starting August 27. Expected to cost between £350 and £400, these panels could reduce annual energy bills by £70 to £110, potentially paying for themselves within four years. While retailers like Lidl, B&Q, and Currys have expressed interest, manufacturers must ensure compliance with product specification rules and registration with the Energy Networks Association (ENA). Specialist supplier Hampshire Generators expects to begin online sales of a 400W kit by late August.

In Germany, SKYWORTH Solar is scheduled to launch its SolaMate balcony PV system on August 15, 2026. The system is designed to mount on balcony railings and plug directly into domestic power points. The kit includes two TOPCon PV modules with a cumulative capacity of 900W and an 800W microinverter, aligning with German feed-in regulations. The product will be available through the Joybuy Germany e-commerce channel.
