Plums offer significant nutritional benefits for heart and bone health

Plums offer significant nutritional benefits for heart, gut, and bone health. Available in peak season from August to early February, these fruits are a rich source of dietary fiber and various plant-based compounds.

Dr. Francesco Lo Monaco, a preventive cardiologist at The National Heart Clinic, notes that the dark red-purple skin contains anthocyanins. These antioxidant components, part of the flavonoid-polyphenol family, may help protect cells from oxidative stress associated with cardiovascular disease. Additionally, plums provide approximately 150 mg of potassium per fruit, which aids in regulating blood pressure by balancing sodium levels and easing tension in blood vessel walls.

Nutritionist Farzanah Nasser recommends consuming a variety of colors in one's diet, noting that the purple hues found in plums are often overlooked. Plums can be eaten fresh, cooked in sweet or savory dishes, or dried.
