Pluto: Characteristics and history of the dwarf planet

Pluto remains one of the most physically complex landscapes in the solar system, characterized by a blue atmospheric haze, water-ice mountains, and nitrogen-ice glaciers. Data from the New Horizons flyby revealed that broken pieces of water-ice crust appear to float across nitrogen glaciers like icebergs. Additionally, Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, orbit a point in empty space located between the two bodies.

Since its discovery in 1930, the dwarf planet has undergone classification changes and has not yet completed a single orbit around the Sun, as its orbital period is approximately 248 Earth years. The name Pluto was suggested by eleven-year-old Venetia Burney in March 1930, who drew inspiration from the Roman god of the underworld due to the world's cold, dark location at the edge of the solar system.
