Pluto planetary status debate intensifies two decades after reclassification

Two decades after the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet in August 2006, the debate over its planetary status has intensified. The decision, which reduced the number of recognized planets in the solar system to eight, remains a point of contention among scientists and enthusiasts.

Some researchers, such as Philip Metzger of the University of Central Florida, argue that the current definition of a planet is scientifically useless. Others, including Kevin Schindler of the Lowell Observatory, note that the debate is driven by both scientific disagreement and emotional attachment to the former planet. The movement to restore Pluto's status has seen various forms of activism, including organized resistance and public petitions, with much of the momentum centered in the United States.
